Let me tell you about my great-grandmother, Lily May. She was born way back in 1877 on Johnson’s Fork in Boyd County, Kentucky. She and her husband, Jess, made a life together on a modest 4-acre patch of land. They had a simple three-room house, a canning cellar dug into the ground, a tobacco shed, and even a buried wooden icebox—a rarity for the area. They also ran a small moonshine still, crafting corn whiskey for themselves and as gifts for family in Illinois and West Virginia during the holidays.
